A note on animalier bronzes

A suggestion has been put forward that these two monkeys are 19th century animalier bronzes. The French word "animalier" refers to a group of animal sculptors working in the 19th century to the present day. Sculptors such as Antoine-Louis Barye, P J Mene, E Fremiet. One authority (39) lists over 700 animal sculptors recorded from the beginning of the 19th century. There are no other monkeys with these specific poses recorded as animalier bronzes. After much enquiry within the antiques trade and auctioneering profession the general consensus is that these two monkeys are not 19th century animalier bronzes. The two monkeys are of a gun metal and by the 1840’s bronze guns were on the verge of obsolescence. Close visual and detailed scientific examination dispels the idea that they are 19th century.
