The species of monkey as advised by London Zoo is Rhesus Macaque, an old world monkey (Macaca Mulatta), a type not exceeding 18 inches (46 cm) in height, the so-called organ grinder monkey to be found in North Africa, India, etc, often kept as pets and seen in paintings depicting Court life. A common type and easily available, the tail shorter than other monkeys and the texture of the fur fairly flat and smooth. The Natural History Museum, South Kensington, feels it is safer to consider the two monkeys as macaque without specifying the type. Sir David Attenborough kindly provided the information that macaques are difficult to differentiate. They are generally an undistinguished greyish or brownish colour and their life span can be up to 30 years. There are about 60 varieties of macaque. They are bright, adaptable, versatile, enterprising and tough.
